Swollen eyelid of a middle-aged man caused by the infection of a meibomian gland, a secretory gland in the eyelids. The infection causes the secretion from the glands to become thicker than normal, blocking the glands and leading to the development of cysts (chalazions) in the eyelid. Most cysts heal naturally, but some require surgical removal.
