Acute angle-closure glaucoma affecting a 70-year-old woman's eye. This is an acute form of glaucoma (glaucoma with a sudden onset, rather than building up over time). It occurs when fluid outflow from inside the eye is blocked, usually due to a defect in the iris. This leads to a rise in pressure inside the eyeball, and if not treated promptly by removing the obstruction, can result in blindness.
