Conjunctivitis in a 3-year-old girl's eye. Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the outer membrane of the eye. The conjunctiva becomes red, swollen and discharges water or pus (yellow). Conjunctivitis can be caused by a bacterial or viral infection, an allergy, or by physical or chemical irritants.
