Eye cyst (centre) on the lower eyelid of a 72 year old man. This is a chalazion, or meibomian cyst, which arises when one of the meibomian glands becomes blocked. Meibomian glands lubricate the edge of the eyelid. Chalazions are usually painless and often disappear without treatment, but particularly large ones that hinder vision can be surgically removed under local anaesthesia.
