Earache. Woman holding her painful ear. Earache is a common symptom and is usually caused by infection or by disorders in neighbour- ing internal structures. Infection in ears is normally centred on the middle ear, containing the ear drum, or the canal which connects the middle to the outside of the head. A loss of hearing can accompany the earache. Earache is also experienced by people suffering from dental problems, tonsil- itis, throat cancer or pain in the jaw or neck muscles. This is because the ear is served by the same nerves as these areas.
