Tinnitus, conceptual artwork. Tinnitus is the perception of a noise when there is no cause present. It can be caused by a number of factors, such as exposure to loud noises, a head injury, stress, certain drugs or nerve damage, for instance due to a tumour. In some cases the perceived sound is so loud as to interfere with sleep and drown out other sounds. Treatment is of the underlying cause, if it is known.
