Caption

This coronal (frontal) high resolution CT through the petrous temporal bone shows a soft tissue mass (red arrow) in the middle ear with associated bony erosion of the ossicular chain. This represents a cholesteatoma. This occurs secondary to a perforation of the tympanic membrane (ear drum) through which squamous epithelial cells migrate through into the middle ear where it results in bone erosion/destruction.
