Gout: clinical photo of a foot showing a tophus (swelling) at the base of the big toe. Gout is a disease in which a defect in uric acid metabolism causes an excess of the acid & its salts (sodium urate) to accumulate in the bloodstream and the joints. These collect in the joint capsules as tophi, causing an acute inflammation, with accompanying swelling, redness & pain. Gout has traditionally been associated with "excessive living", in particular overeating & overdrinking. Treatment involves the use of anti-inflammatory drugs & abstention from rich foods & excessive alcohol.
