Gangrene. View of blackened necrosing (dying) skin on the foot due to gangrene. The skin on the heel (centre) & side of the foot (top) is black & the surrounding skin is peeling & swollen. Gangrene is the death and decay of part of the body due to poor blood supply. This is caused by injury, disease, frostbite, severe burns, diabetes, artherosclerosis & embolism. Treatment includes restoring the blood supply to the area & giving antibiotic drugs to ensure that the tissue does not become infected. In some cases amputation is required.
