Male breasts. View of an enlarged breast (at left) on the chest of a 67 year-old man. This condition, known as gynaecomastia, is caused by an excess of the female sex hormone oestrogen in the blood. It is normal for men to produce small amounts of oestrogen, just as women produce comparable quantities of all the male sex hormones. Excessive production of oestrogen may be due to a number of factors such as disease (for example cirrhosis or testicular cancer), puberty, or by the action of certain drugs. Treatment is directed towards the underlying cause.
