Ganglion. View of` a ganglion cyst (centre) on a person's foot. A ganglion is a cystic swelling associated with the sheath of a tendon. It normally occurs on the wrist although a finger or a foot may sometimes be affected. The swelling contains thick fluid derived from the synovial fluid that lubricates tendons and joints. The size of a ganglion varies from the size of a small pea to the size of a golf ball. They may disappear spontaneously or be treated if they are painful or unsightly. Ganglia may be surgically removed or the fluid may be sucked out with a syringe; with the latter treatment ganglia tend to recur.
