Atrophic gastritis. Light micrograph section of atrophic cells of the lining (mucosa, down right) of a human stomach. Atrophy is the shrinkage or wasting away of cells as a result of disease. Atrophic gastritis may develop following chronic gastritis, which is associated with smoking and long term alcohol abuse, or spontaneously as an autoimmune disease. Magnification unknown.
