Gangrenous foot. Foot with all five toes amputated due to gangrene. Gangrene is the death of tissue due to inadequate blood supply. The skin usually turns black and the area may become infected with bacteria. Gangrene may result from the restriction of blood flow caused by medical conditions such as vascular disease or diabetes. Treatment is with vasodilatory drugs and surgery to improve the circulation, but in extreme cases, such as here, amputation is necessary. Further amputation may be required if the gangrene continues to spread.
