Gouty tophus of the toe of an 82 year old man. A tophus is a deposit of crystals of uric acid in the tissues. Elevated blood levels of uric acid, known as hyperuricaemia, can also lead to gout, the deposition of uric acid crystals in joints. This is an extremely painful condition, which leads to swelling of the joint, as here, and intense pain on moving or even lightly touching the affected joint. Treatment is with painkilling drugs, and colchicine can also be taken to reduce the severity of an attack.
