Male breast. Enlarged breast in a 12 year old boy with pubertal gynaecomastia. This condition is caused by an increase in the amount of the female sex hormone oestrogen in the blood. An imbalance between oestrogen and the male sex hormone testosterone commonly occurs in males during puberty. The excess breast tissue usually disappears without treatment in 2 to 3 years.
