Tongue after glossitis surgery. Median rhomboid glossitis is a diamond-shaped, elevated, inflammatory lesion along the midline of the tongue. It is thought to be caused by the yeast Candida albicans, which causes thrush. It is a benign condition but may cause discomfort and difficulty while eating and drinking. Treatment, when needed, is with anti-fungal drugs or, in severe cases, surgical removal of the lesion.
