Goitre. Coloured ultrasound scan of a enlarged thyroid gland (upper left), also known as a goitre. The thyroid is an endocrine gland found in the neck, responsible for the production of hormones controlling the body's metabolism. This goitre is called a toxic multinodular goitre, as the thyroid gland contains several benign nodules (non-cancerous growths) that are causing hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is a condition where the thyroid gland is overactive and produces too much of the metabolic hormones. A goitre that is very large will cause a person's neck to swell and may cause breathing and swallowing problems. Treatment may involve iodine replacement or surgical removal.
