Herpes simplex. Close-up of the eye of a 2-year- old girl showing a blister due to herpes simplex on her lower eyelid. The small, fluid-filled blister (at centre) has been caused by infection with herpes simplex virus type 1. The infection is usually associated with the mouth, lips and face, It is contagious, extremely common and symptoms are usually mild. However infection can be fatal in patients with a deficient immune system, such as occurs in acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Treatment depends on the severity of infection. Antiviral drugs such as acyclovir are sometimes helpful.
