Chronic active hepatitis. Light micrograph of a section through a human liver with chronic active hepatitis. Hepatitis is the inflammation of the liver, which leads to the degeneration and fibrous thickening of tissue (cirrhosis). Here the liver's functional cells (hepatocytes, pink) are being destroyed and replaced with fibrous tissue (blue). Chronic active hepatitis is often associated with excess alcohol consumption.
