Herpes infection. Light micrograph of skin affected by a herpes virus infection. The cells at upper left appear swollen and some have no obvious nuclei. Herpes viruses can cause a variety of infections, including cold sores and genital herpes. Antiviral drugs such as acyclovir may be useful in treating an infection, although the virus can lie dormant in the body even after symptoms have disappeared. Magnification unknown.
