Hydrocephalus. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of an axial (horizontal) section through a brain with hydrocephalus (water on the brain). This is a condition where the cerebrospinal fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord has its production, flow or absorption disrupted, causing it to collect in the ventricles (red, centre and lower centre) of the brain. In children, the condition causes the head to swell up as the bones have not yet fused. In adults, the inflexible skull results in headaches, and a loss of co- ordination and mental function. Treatment is by draining excess fluid from the brain.
