Hypothyroidism. Goitre (swollen neck) of a 10- year-old girl with hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is a deficiency of the thyroid hormone caused by under activity of the thyroid gland. The gland, which is in the neck, becomes enlarged to compensate for this. Thyroid hormone influences growth and the metabolism, therefore a deficiency causes, amongst other things, weight gain, intolerance to the cold and fatigue. Hypothyroidism has a number of causes, including an autoimmune disorder (where the body's immune system attacks its own tissues) or surgical removal of part of the thyroid gland. Treatment is with thyroid hormone tablets or patches.
