Congenital hypothyroidism. Scintigram of a thyroid gland that has formed in the wrong place during foetal development (ectopia). The thyroid is an endocrine gland found in the neck, responsible for the production of hormones controlling the body's metabolism. When ectopia occurs, the mispositioning of the gland results in hypothyroidism (lowered thyroid function). Treatment involves the use of levothyroxine, a synthetic thyroid hormone. Using the radioactive tracer iodine-123, a scintigram shows the activity of the thyroid gland.
