Cold sores (Herpes simplex) on the lips of a 38 year old woman. These are painful blisters caused by infection by the Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV- 1). It is related to genital herpes, which is typically caused by HSV-2, although both infections can be caused by either virus. Early application of creams containing antiviral drugs such as aciclovir can help reduce the duration of an attack. However, recurrence is extremely likely.
