Caption

Hepatitis C. Light micrograph of a section through a liver affected by the Hepatitis C virus. Infection with this virus causes inflammation and scarring of the liver (cirrhosis). The infection has caused T-lymphocyte white blood cells (dark purple nuclei) to migrate and accumulate in the liver tissue, for instance at lower centre. Numerous globules of fat (white) are also seen, notably at upper left. Hepatitis C is spread through blood or sexual contact. It can be treated by drugs if diagnosed early, but can cause fatal liver damage. Haematoxylin-eosin-saffron stain. Magnification: x220 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
