Caption

Hepatitis C. Light micrograph of a section through a liver affected by the Hepatitis C virus. Infection with this virus causes inflammation and scarring of the liver (cirrhosis). The infection has caused T-lymphocyte white blood cells (blue with dark purple nuclei) to migrate and accumulate in the liver tissue. The lymphocytes are concentrated along bands of fibrous tissue, the characteristic sign of cirrhosis. The presence of this tissue disrupts liver function. Hepatitis C is spread through blood or sexual contact. It can be treated by drugs if diagnosed early, but can cause fatal liver damage. Masson's trichrome stain. Magnification: x55 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
