Hepatitis C. Light micrograph of a section through a liver affected by the Hepatitis C virus. Infection with this virus causes inflammation and scarring of the liver (cirrhosis). Cirrhosis is the replacement of normal liver tissue (hepatocytes, yellow) with bands of scar tissue made up primarily of the protein collagen (red). The presence of this fibrous tissue disrupts liver function. Hepatitis C is spread through blood or sexual contact. It can be treated by drugs if diagnosed early, but can cause fatal liver damage. Sirius red stain. Magnification: x28 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
