Caption

Hairy tongue due to upper respiratory tract infection in a 22-year-old man. The white material on the tongue is caused by bacteria. The respiratory infection is caused by a virus. A normal tongue has large amounts of bacteria, but an imbalance in the microbial load in the body can result in bacterial growth like that seen here.
