External haemorrhoids (piles) of a 43 year old woman. A small fissure, that is in the process of healing, can also be seen. Piles are common, particularly during pregnancy due to the pressure of the foetus on the veins in the anus. Some people have a congenital weakness of these veins. Mild cases are controlled by drinking plenty of fluids and a high-fibre diet and by establishing regular toilet habits. More severe cases are removed surgically.
