Hypertension. Digitised colour 2D-echocardiogram (ultrasound scan) of the heart of a patient with hypertension. Hypertension is characterised by an abnormally high blood pressure; this can lead to enlargement of the heart, as seen here. At right (red) the left ventricular wall shows dilated cardiomyopathy. The left and right chambers of the heart appear dark. Typically, when the heart is overworked, the left ventricle increases its size to pump more blood which may lead to a thinning of the ventricular walls. Hypertension may be genetic or age or stress or disease related, and requires treatment to lower blood pressure.
