Chest pain. Middle-aged man being comforted by his female partner whilst experiencing severe chest pains in bed at night. Chest pain in men of middle age may be due to insufficient oxygen being carried to the heart muscle & is termed angina pectoris (or angina). Angina usually arises when the demand for oxygen is increased, during exercise (sex) & at times of stress. The underlying cause is coronary artery disease, the restriction of the coronary arteries due to the formation of atheroma (atherosclerosis).
