Heart attack. Conceptual image of paper people showing one suffering a heart attack, with a red colour on the chest (at bottom). Heart attack, (or acute myocardial infarction) is the starvation of part of the heart muscle due to an obstruction in the blood supply. This results in severe chest pains. Smoking may cause raised blood pressure, respiratory complications, and a hardening of the arteries, which are conditions all implicated in eventual heart failure. The pain of heart attack has been compared to that caused by a great weight pressing on the chest and radiating down the arms. The mortality rate due to heart failure depends on severity, and speed of treatment.
