Cardiomyopathy. Coloured chest X-ray of a patient suffering cardiomyopathy, showing enlargement of the left ventricle of the heart. Ribs of the rib- cage are seen with the lungs coloured purple; part of each lung is congested (orange) due to this condition. The diseased heart is at lower centre, appearing as a yellow shadow. It is highly enlarged at lower right, due to the swollen left ventricle protruding into this region. Cardiomyo- pathy is a disease of the heart muscle that makes the heart less efficient at pumping blood to the lungs and the rest of the body. Known also as "heart failure", it may be inherited, due to meta- bolic abnormality, infection, or unknown cause.
