Heart disease. Conceptual artwork of a section through a heart to depict it "running down" due to heart disease. At top are the major blood vessels of the heart; the heart chambers are also seen. The workings of the heart are represented by cogs. If cogs in a machine stop working, the machine cannot function. Likewise, if the heart stops working properly, as occurs in heart disease, the body cannot function properly. A heart attack (myocardial infarction) results when depletion of the heart's blood supply causes sudden death of part of the heart muscle. Risk of heart disease is highest in the stressed, smokers and obese.
