Heart attack. Illustration representing a myocardial infarction or heart attack. The heart attack is due to the sudden death, or necrosis, of part of the heart muscle (blue, at lower centre). Heart attacks commonly result from a blockage (circled) in one of the coronary arteries which provide the heart with its blood supply. Atherosclerosis is the most frequent cause of blockage. In atherosclerosis, fatty plaques of atheroma develop in the inner lining of the arteries restricting the blood flow. The typical symptom of a heart attack is sudden pain in the centre of the chest. Severe enough damage to the heart muscle will result in heart failure.
