High blood pressure. Abstract composite illustration representing high blood pressure, or hypertension. The hypertension of the heart is detected as a high reading on the sphygmomanometer. In reality the sphygmomanometer would be placed over the arm when measuring blood pressure. Hypertension increases the risk of developing coronary heart disease and both conditions are widespread in affluent, Western populations. Intensive medical research has been dedicated to their causes and in developing drugs and surgical techniques to deal with their effects. Diet, drinking, smoking and stress are some of the factors implicated as causes.
