Heart disease. Artwork of the heart with test tubes containing cholesterol. Cholesterol is a fatty substance that the body needs to produce hormones, and to help transport fats around the body. However, excess cholesterol in the blood can lead to atherosclerosis, fatty deposits on the inside walls of arteries. This leads to impaired blood flow through the artery, and a lack of oxygen and nutrients to the area the artery supplies. If a coronary artery (light blue on the surface of the heart) is affected, heart muscles cannot function properly, and Angina pectoris (chest pain during exertion) or even a heart attack can result.
