Businessman suffering from severe chest pain, the classic symptom of a heart attack (acute myocardial infarction). In a heart attack, the blood supply to part of the heart muscle (the myocardium) is stopped, due to a total blockage in one of the coronary arteries. The result is the death of a section of heart muscle (myocardial infarction), causing the symptoms of an intense, crushing pain & breathlessness. Heart attacks vary in their severity, depending on the site and size of the infarction. The prognosis varies similarly, with the patient's age & general health being important factors.
