Heart failure. Artwork of a section through a human heart with congestive or left-sided heart failure. The heart's main blood vessels are at upper centre. Heart failure occurs when the heart is unable to pump blood efficiently. Here, the ventricle at right (lower centre) has compensated by developing an abnormally thick wall. This side of the heart fails to empty itself, causing the lungs (upper left & centre right) to become congested with blood. Shortness of breath and fatigue are due to the pulmonary oedema, the build-up of fluid in the lungs, that is associated with this condition.
