Heart attack. Conceptual computer artwork of shock waves surrounding a heart, representing a heart attack (myocardial infarction). The heart (red) is a hollow sac of muscular tissue that pumps blood around the body. It is itself supplied by coronary blood vessels (not seen) that run over the surface of the heart. A blockage (thrombosis) of these will deprive the heart tissue of oxygen, leading to the intense pain of a heart attack, damage or loss of heart function and often death. Restricted blood supply is commonly caused by vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, the deposition of fat deposits that narrow blood vessels.
