Heart attack. Conceptual computer artwork of bolts of lightning on a heart, representing a heart attack (myocardial infarction). The heart (red) is a hollow sac of muscular tissue that pumps blood around the body. This muscle tissue is supplied with oxygenated blood by coronary blood vessels (not seen) that run over the surface of the heart. A blockage of these will deprive the heart tissue of oxygen, leading to the intense pain of a heart attack, damage or loss of heart function and often death. Restricted blood supply is commonly caused by vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, where deposits of fat narrow blood vessels.
