Heart disease. Coloured single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) scans of a diseased heart, seen in axial (horizontal) section. The scan on the left shows myocardial ischaemia as the patient exercises. The resting patient's heart is at right. The uptake of blood by the myocardium (the muscular wall of the heart) is shown in red. Ischaemia is an inadequate supply of blood, and is seen as the narrowed area of red at the top of the exercising heart. The heart's blood supply was injected with the radioactive tracer technetium- 99m (Tc-99m). This is detected by its emission of gamma ray photons, and the image constructed using computed tomography techniques.
