Heart disease. Artwork of a sectioned heart showing pericarditis. The lower part of the heart is seen. Pericarditis is an inflammation of the pericardium, the outer membrane that encloses the heart. The immune response produces phagocytes that devour pathogens, which causes exudate (fluid) effusion (brown) to collect in the pericardial space. If the exudate is not treated it may cause pressure on the heart, leading to chest pain and breathing difficulties.
