Heart failure. Cutaway illustration of a human heart with congestive ventricular heart failure. A lung is seen at right. The ventricle at right is not fully functioning, and therefore failing to empty the oxygenated blood (red) up through the aorta and around the body. This results in a backflow of pressure in the veins causing abnormal swellings (oedemas) in the lungs or other organs. This affects the ventricle at left as it is unable to effectively empty due to this pressure, a backflow of deoxygenated blood (blue) is seen unable to flow into the pulmonary artery.
