Antibiotic treatment. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through tissue from the heart's aortic valve, showing an infection of bacteria (blue). This is a condition called endocarditis. These are Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The bacteria grow in vegetative growths on the inside of the heart. These growths protect the bacteria from immune system responses, so prolonged antibiotic drug therapy is required. Here, the bacteria have been treated with the antibiotic drug ceftazidine, resulting in dead and dying bacteria (purple). Resistant bacteria and late diagnosis can lead to death from heart valve malfunctions and failures. Magnification unknown.
