Heart defect. Coloured ultrasound scan of a heart with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). This is an axial (horizontal) section through the heart. There are four heart chambers, and here the left ventricle (red) is much larger than the others. Hypertrophy (enlargement) of the left ventricle of the heart can be due to high blood pressure, a hereditary condition, or excessive exercise. Treatment depends on the cause. The left ventricle is the heart chamber that pumps blood around the body. Ultrasound scanning uses high- frequency sound waves to look at structures inside the body.
