Deep vein thrombosis. Digitised light micrograph of a cross section of a blocked vein: a condition known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The thrombus (clot) is here coloured yellow; part of the red surrounding area is the wall of the vein; at centre, a thin U-shaped red line demarcates the remaining lumen of the vein not blocked. Deep vein thromboses are provoked by situations that encourage sluggish blood flow and which increase the tendency of the blood to coagulate; these include prolonged bed rest, atherosclerosis, sur- gery and pregnancy. A danger is that part of the clot may become detached and lodge in the heart.
