Inflamed vein. Coloured Scanning Electron Micro- graph (SEM) of a vein cut open, showing its wall highly inflamed and thickened due to phlebitis (thrombophlebitis). Veins usually have thin walls compared to the size of the passage within because the blood flowing through them is at low pressure. Thrombophlebitis occurs when a vein becomes inflamed due to injury. The condition is common in intravenous drug users, and sometimes develops as a complication of varicose veins. Treatment includes bandaging and anti-inflammatory drugs. Magnification unknown.
