Atheroma. Artwork showing a cross-section through an artery and an atheroma (red) on the artery wall (orange). The atheroma is a fatty build-up on the internal wall of the artery, mostly consisting of cholesterol deposited from the blood. The green arrows highlight the thickness of the atheroma and the severely reduced blood flow that this condition causes. Hardening of the atheroma is the first sign of atherosclerosis, one of the world's major causes of death through heart attacks and strokes.
