Inflamed vein. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a sliced vein, showing phlebitis (thrombophlebitis). Veins usually have thin walls because the blood flowing through them is at low pressure. In thrombophlebitis, a vein's wall becomes thickened and inflamed due to injury, and the narrower passageway leads to clot formation within the vein. The condition is common in intravenous drug users, and sometimes develops as a complication of varicose veins. Treatment includes bandaging and anti-inflammatory drugs. Magnification unknown.
